Passivating 300 Series & 400 Series Stainless Steel

300 and 400 series stainless steel alloys are frequently used due to their strength, relatively low weight relative to other materials, and exceptional corrosion resistance.  However, the corrosion resistance of stainless steel can be reduced during the manufacturing process; grease, oil, iron particles, and other contaminants can be left behind, which can compromise the chromium oxide layer that forms naturally on the surface of stainless steel when exposed to air.

The solution is passivation, which helps the protective oxide layer form faster and makes it thicker.  And unlike electropolishing, passivation:

  • Does not use electricity as part of the process
  • Doesn’t alter the appearance of the material
  • Doesn’t change the appearance of the steel
