Electropolishing is an electrochemical process that effectively removes surface material and imperfections from stainless steel parts by removing the peaks and valleys through a controlled current while effectively streamlining the part and creating a stronger passive oxide layer. This passive layer is what protects your part from corrosionability. Electropolishing is a far superior final finish as opposed to other mechanical processes such as buffing or grinding which can actually hurt or break the surface material on the part creating corrosion zones and growth sites. This process serves many purposes from cosmetic improvements to creating a more passive layer for better corrosion and erosion resistance.
Prior to any passivation process, the parts must be degreased and cleaned so that no surface contaminants remain. Industry-standard is to use an alkaline degreaser if necessary and pickle to remove any other foreign matter that may be present before the passivation process. The pickling process removes any dirt, scale, and treats other weld affected areas. All parts must pass a water break free test to ensure complete passivation every time. All processes are verified through testing after passivation or electropolishing.
